According to Farcebook;
The compositor service moves distortion rendering from the application process to the OVRServer process using texture sets that are shared between the two processes. A texture set is basically a swap chain, with buffers rotated to allow game rendering to proceed while the current frame is distorted and displayed.

Layer support allows multiple independent application render targets to be independently sent to the HMD. For example, you might render a heads-up display, background, and game space each in their own separate render target. Each render target is a layer, and the layers are combined by the compositor (rather than the application) right before distortion and display. Each layer may have a different size, resolution, and update rate.
The API simplification is a move towards the final API, which primarily removes support for application-based distortion rendering.

From my lesser knowledge of programming, but greater cynicism as a sys admin. I'm guessing you need an insane video card cus that's whats doing the grunt work.

There will be a reason for these insane specs that's not just Candy Crush related.

I suspect that LFS being popular and low spec upset 'some pile of money' so the specs were changed so 'some pile of money' could make more cash.

Check out the alternatives that aren't owned by a bunch of 'redacted'. A collection of 'redacted' pointless 'redacted' moneyhungry 'redacted', 'redacted', 'redacted', and 'redacted', 'redacted', up their 'redacted', 'redacted', 'redacted', corporations.

There are other systems that use opensource api's that, in my opinion, are better to support. Smile

"But HTC has a huge advantage over other VR headsets in its partnership with Valve - there's a massive amount of Steam games that already have the necessary code to work with the Oculus Rift, and Valve is releasing an open source API (application programming interface) so that developers can make their products (not just games) compatible with SteamVR." http://www.wareable.com/vr/htc-vive-vr-headset-release-date-price-specs-7929

Yes, Occ Rift looked awesome and was the first. Then Farcebook came and .......

Look at all the options rather than just one. The 3D concept is coming, just support the ones that fit with LFS. The min specs for Occ Rift are so far away from your stated vision for LFS it's not funny.

Don't you read* ?Smile, Dolphins have already saved your arse once. The least you can do is provide some extra fish !

Interesting article on Orca. I think their much smarter than dogs, they have the brains to kill those who ^!$$ them off in captivity. And that's worse than being in solitary for us. They've done nothing wrong...

"Dolphins are brilliant — the second smartest beings on the planet. Scientists have just declared that dolphins are so intelligent, they should be treated as “non-human persons.” As such, to imprison dolphins in tanks, exploit them in amusement parks, or slaughter them (such as the tragic Taiji killings) is as morally atrocious as slavery and torture."
http://www.globalanimal.org/2011/02/22/dolphins-smarter-than-your-three-year-old/

* Free copy of the book you haven't read Smile

“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”

This is not a dig, this is a sys admin/tech work related response, but I have come across stuff like this before so please just think about what I'm saying Smile Thank you for your co-operation.

Had a quick read through the SDK notes but, having read my post above regarding Occ Rift minimum system requirements, do you think that developing in XP may be part of the issue ?

Occ Rift have stated very high system requirements that your developement PC may or may not meet.

I would suggest ensuring that your developement PC meets or exceeds the minimum requirements for Occ Rifts stated system requirements.

Occ Rift have stated that their system requires "Graphics cards need to be equivalent to or more powerful than the AMD Radeon R9 290 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 970, while the processor needs to match or exceed an Intel i5-4590 chip. Systems need at least 8GB of RAM, two USB 3.0 ports and must be able to handle HDMI 1.3 video output. They also need to be running at least Windows 7 with Service Pack 1.

As I said to another client today, my opinion of the spec is irrelevant.
What is relevant are the stated specs !

Keep an eye on E3, apparently lots of VR, Occ Rift will do CandyCrush 3D to support Win 10 ! DX 12 will require the same spec PC as the Occ Rift spec and Win 10 will only run on these PC's.

Back to reality, and from there to the gaming world and on topic, Valve seem to have applied for a new(ish) patent for VR, Project Chaperone.

The USPTO application states that "Chaperone" is for: "hardware and software, sensors, and beacons for the detection and measurement of physical objects and the representation of such objects in virtual reality environments; devices used for the detection and measurement of physical objects and the representation of such objects in virtual reality environments; electronic apparatus for the detection and measurement of physical objects and the representation of such objects in virtual reality environments."

Conspiracy theory time !!!: C is the third letter of the alphabet, small spelling change, "hope r on."

Half life 3 is being released and is 3D !

Still, the HTC/Vive thing is looking more hopeful than CandyCrushCorp.

"When Oculus launches its first consumer product in 2016, virtual reality porn will come along with it. At least, that seems to be the inevitable consequence of Oculus founder Palmer Luckey’s decision not to block the adult entertainment industry from utilizing the headset for its raunchy purposes. When asked about how he would deal with such applications of the headset at a panel at Monday’s Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference, Palmer responded, “The rift is an open platform. We don’t control what software can run on it. And that’s a big deal.”

If you want Rockingham now, or in fact for a number of years prior to now, use Power and Glory. Physics are as good as PCar, cars are great, and no end of modded tracks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd9fEoU685k

I can do the entire NZ series on all the tracks and have the choice of different years of circuit layout. And several years of Bathurst, plus, plus, plus.......

Please give LFS the option of adding tracks, the physics are far better and the added tracks are free !

Cus, how long have we been waiting in LFS for Rockingham ?.

Forget the Beetle, forget the tyre physics, The new Westhill is awesome, add in Rockingham. Please ?

Orca are the largest member of the dolphin family, they are NOT whales, nor are they dangerous to humans..

And if you were locked up as he was you'd probably go psychotic too. They kill in the wild for food, same as we kill for food.

In the wild there are very few recorded attacks on humans, and they generally occurred because we looked like seals.

We have a large number of pods migrating around NZ and they are beautiful to watch in the wild, they even cruise into Wellington harbour sometimes on a tiki tour.

Generally they are no threat at all, polar bears on the other hand seem to be quite a bit more dangerous.

I really don't think that piracy is the issue at all.

It may be better in Europe but the only servers that have drivers are the demo servers. There just aren't enough regulars racing anymore.

The best solution to get numbers up would be to release Westhill on demo. Also the UFR and XFR but lock setup for demo users. Give them a taste of the cars but encourage them to buy to get to setup the cars.

That will get more drivers, encourage new users, give the work done on Westhill some exposure and encourage more sales.

Judging from the Occ Rift release there's no point in relying on that increasing the user base. Judging from Scrawens views on using 7 then I wouldn't expect much further progress there.

There's no point in waiting for the next great update, it would be better to use what's there, encourage more racing, get more people online and build on that.

If nothing's done then the situation will only get worse and we'll lose even more servers.

This from Computerworld

"Graphics cards need to be equivalent to or more powerful than the AMD Radeon R9 290 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 970, while the processor needs to match or exceed an Intel i5-4590 chip, the virtual-reality headset maker said in a blog post. Systems need at least 8GB of RAM, two USB 3.0 ports and must be able to handle HDMI 1.3 video output. They also need to be running at least Windows 7 with Service Pack 1.

Having common specs will simplify the development process and allow programmers to create apps and games that offer a consistent experience, said Oculus chief architect Atman Binstock in a blog post. This is important, since hardware that isn't up to par will deliver a negative experience, he said."

"Laptop owners who hoped to use the Rift are out of luck, at least for now. Many laptops have external video outputs connected to an integrated GPU (graphic processing units), said Binstock said. However, in those scenarios the video output is handled by "hardware and software mechanisms that can't support the Rift," he added."

Well, that answers most questions !

Quote from cargame.nl : I wonder when Racer X NZ kicks in here with his Illuminati/NWO theories, when it's actually needed he's not here. Thats even more conspiring!

But, I've already posted about the current online state down here. And if your here, then you can't race in Europe cuz lag.

And, as awesome as Westhill is, it didn't recreate online racing in Australasia. Offline, who knows.... I've played a bit but the AI is the same, but with no online worth talking about cus the demo only does Blackwood and that's really it here online .....

Thinking about running a server but it just seems there's not the licensed players to make it worthwhile as I'd need to run a demo server as well. And, no, I really can't be bother with that.

So, Dirt Rally to play with, RSRBR 2015 to really play with, PCars to laugh at, and Zombie Goatz !!!!

And wait.........

That’s right - you’ve found the ONLY SURVIVAL GAME ON STEAM that is NOT in Early Access!*

You no longer have to fantasize about being a zombie goat in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, your dreams have finally come true!
Key Features
Mandatory crafting system because everyone else is doing it
Zombies that bug out. There’s a pun here about actual living bugs, but we’re not going to bother
You can craft anything in the world, as long as it’s one of the half dozen weapons in the game
Zombies, because this is a zombie game, remember?

Here are some of Coffee Stains own reviews.

"I didn't think it could get any worse, the new patch is completely ridiculous. Disgusting title, zombie theme shamelessly stolen from modders, and it lags like crazy. Don't be fooled."

"Goat Zero is pretty spot on as far as the quality of this #### is concerned. Don't support this game y'all"

And those are the studio's own reviews.
BUT, it is the only game of it's type actually not on early access. Smile

(There is an internet NSFL joke in the above, just thought I'd better give warning)

When did an BDA Escort last win a National Rally round ?, 81 was the last WRC win. Last Rear wheel drive win here was in 87.

But we do like our BDA's, as can be seen from the number here.

Ford BDA Escort - 2015 NZ National Rally Round winner.
Racer X NZ

Maybe only in NZ, But a 40 year old BDA Escort has just won the latest Otago leg of the NZ Rally Championship. That includes beating a certain Mr K Block from the US of A, a Mr A McRae from GB, every other top NZ Rally Driver, all the current 4WD/2WD rally cars cars etc.

This is from the pre event advertising ! "..... and event draw cards Ken Block, Alister McRae and Hayden Paddon."
http://www.otagorally.com/home/

Not since 1987 has a 2WD car won a NZ Rally Championship round.

Paddon, on a fleeting visit home between world championship events, was always a hot favourite to win the Classic Rally component of the event.

However, the performance gap between his 35 year old car and the state of the art turbocharged four wheel drive machines that dominate the contemporary national championship scene was such that no one considered him a prospect for the outright win.

Driving a rear wheel drive Escort BDA - a type of car last competitive on the national stage before he was born - the 28 year old South Cantabrian secured the win with a record breaking run through the final special stage of the event, taking outright victory by 2.5sec from Tauranga driver Phil Campbell.

"I wasn't holding anything back over the last couple of stages," Paddon said at the finish.

Kennard, who along with Paddon's father, Chris, had urged him to press for the outright win, described their weekend as "a very, very special ride".

"The results a surprise. First and foremost we came here to enjoy ourselves in a rear wheel drive BDA and we did just that. Thanks to Tony Gosling for the use of his car and to our entire team for their efforts. A great result before we head back to Europe and our next WRC event in Portugal," Paddon said at the rally finish.

Shared for education. If you've never read this, WTF ?????
Here you go.....

This book should be a required read for everyone today. FFS, his language and books have given us todays tech !

If your incapable of reading, here's Johnny Mnemonic, One of his short stories. Written before Neuromancer but filmed much later. With Keanu Reeves so you can watch this with your significant other Smile
If you read then here's the original story. Sorry, my bad. The link is to his story 'Burning Chrome' my bad, see below for the Johnny Mnemonic link .....

OK, try here.... However the movie is only a shadow, or a holographic fragment of the original short story. This, if you appreciate language, tech, scifi, should be read. Smile
http://www.flawedart.net/courses/articles/Gibson_Johnny%20_Mnemonic.pdf

... I looked back down in time to see him explode.

Playback on full recall shows Ralfi stepping foward as the little tech sidles out of nowhere, smiling. Just a suggestion of a bow, and his left thumb falls off. It'a a conjuring trick. The thumb hangs suspended. Mirrors? Wires?
And Ralfi stops, his back to us, dark crescents of sweat under the armpits of his pale summer suit. He knows. He must have known. And then the joke-shop thumbtip, heavy as lead, arcs out in a lighting yo-yo trick, and the invisible thread connecting it to the killer's hand passes laterally through Ralfi's skull, just above his eyebrows, whips up, and descends, slicing the pearshaped torso diagonally from shoulder to
rib cage. Cuts so fine that no blood flows until synapses misfire and the first tremors surrender the body to gravity.

This is a NZ opinion. I'd advise you wait till there is a good update that gives good Aussi/NZ racing. IMHO, our servers have moved on now ATM and there is bugger all good racing down here.
It's taken so long between updates that it will take a good update to get LFS things up and running again.

And servers like cargames boot us for lag cus distance, and ..........

I'd just wait and see what happens. And look at other games that are raced down here.

Sad to say this but there are no servers in this part of the world giving good LFS racing on a daily basis, and LFS works best online.
No one loves the AI, really, it's like loving dropbears......

It really hurt saying that but you deserve an honest answer!

And there are other games to play that are updated and have a following down here.

Sorry all, but that's an accurate review of the current Australasian situation.

Very quick review after 4 hrs;

Graphics; Looks good, even with an older card it looks sweet, definatly looks better than RBR. (11 Years newer tho !)
I suspect that like LFS it's more processor based than graphics card. Everything turned up with an old 560 runs fine but that's with an O/C Xeon processor, still, no stuttering or anything. Looks great.

Driving feel; Standard, no, just no. That's with a G27 on stock settings. Basicly feels like every earlier Dirt game, so........
Quote from BigPeBe : "I went on the internet and I found this"

..... much better. I suspect the game really needs careful setup to give it's best. However, bog standard, not even faintly near RBR.
Play lots here to get it right for each person, I'll get back on this.

Menu Setup: ARGH !!!, learn your key/button numbers as that's all it's saying ATM, Use button 17 to save !

First impressions; shows a lot of promise, not as good as RBR yet, but if they keep working on it and sort stuff out, we'll see. Graphics, yes, a win here. Physics, not yet, Occ Rift, well, it's a winner here, as expected.

I've played Codemasters games forever, the early ones were great so I'm really hopeful they'll get this sorted and give us the next great rally game. RBR is 11 years old and it's still the bleeding edge of rally gaming.....

Let's see what the next update brings Smile
